OnlyFans has reversed a planned ban on sexually explicit material after widespread backlash from creators, advocates and users. The company said it initially moved to restrict explicit content to address concerns raised by banks and payment processors, with the policy set to take effect on October 1.
Following criticism that the change would threaten livelihoods, OnlyFans said it secured assurances from its banking and payment partners and will keep explicit content on the platform. The reversal preserves creators’ ability to monetize directly through subscriptions and tips.
Sex workers and other creators said the platform provided a crucial, independent source of income, especially during the economic strains of the COVID-19 pandemic. Advocates argued the ban would have pushed vulnerable creators toward riskier alternatives.
OnlyFans framed the reversal as an effort to balance regulatory and payment-industry pressures with the needs of its community. The episode highlights the fragility and adaptability of the creator economy and the ongoing negotiations between platforms, financial intermediaries and content producers.
