OnlyFans to Ban Sexually Explicit Content Starting October 1, 2021

OnlyFans announced it will ban sexually explicit content beginning October 1, 2021, citing pressure from payment processors and banking partners. The company said the policy change is intended to align with financial partner requirements and strengthen long-term sustainability.

Launched in 2016, OnlyFans built a subscription-based model that gave creators direct monetization and large degrees of control over their content. The platform became widely associated with adult content while also hosting creators across fitness, fashion, music and other fields.

Under the new policy, explicit sexual content will be prohibited, while non-explicit nudity and content in categories such as art, fitness and fashion will remain allowed. OnlyFans said the change aims to improve payment processing stability and foster more reliable partnerships with banks and payment providers.

The decision drew concern from some adult content creators who rely on the platform for income. OnlyFans said it hopes to broaden its appeal to influencers, educators, musicians and other creators to diversify revenue streams and creative opportunities.

OnlyFans also committed to providing resources to help creators transition, including guidance and tools to adapt content and sustain fan engagement.

The move marks a strategic pivot toward a more mainstream content platform intended to secure financial relationships and open new avenues for creators to reach audiences.
